Will I have Scars after a Breast Augmentation?

If you need to add volume and fullness to your breasts, breast augmentation is an incredibly effective solution. The procedure is typically done with the use of saline or silicone implants that are inserted into the breasts through small incisions. Consequently, one of the most popular questions patients ask about surgery is – Will I have scars after a breast augmentation.

Will I have Scars after a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves incisions, so scars are unavoidable. However, during your initial consultation it’s important to ask your surgeon about the implant insertion methods, and the steps that can be taken to minimize the appearance of scars. The surgeon can also let you know the type of scars you can expect, and how visible they are likely to be.

How visible will scars be after breast augmentation?

The implant insertion method selected will determine the location of the scars. The incision can be made in the fold of the breast in the area where the breast meets the chest wall, or around the areola, which is the dark pigment that surrounds the nipple. The resulting scars are usually very inconspicuous. The incision can also be made in the armpit, which means the scar will be totally hidden from view.

Patients are generally advised to keep incisions clean after surgery and wear the supporting garments as instructed, to help reduce scar tissue. Scars can take up to 18 months to heal after breast augmentation.
