What is Blepharoplasty?

By Experts in Plastic Surgery · Comments (0) · Friday, October 1st, 2021

Do you have droopy upper eyelids or bags under your eyes?  If you are unhappy with these changes and want to improve the way your eyes look, blepharoplasty may be the ideal procedure for you.  But what exactly is blepharoplasty?

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical treatment that can rejuvenate the eyelids and make the eyes appear brighter, fresher, and more youthful.

Blepharoplasty is generally done to correct sagging upper eyelid skin but can also be performed on the lower eyelids.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty addresses sagging skin and puffiness in the upper eyelids.

Droopy upper eyelids are the result of the natural aging process and loss of skin elasticity over time.  The sagging of the lids is sometimes so severe that it affects peripheral vision.  Puffiness occurs when the fat pad that cushions the eyelid moves out of position and becomes prominent due to the weakening of the muscles supporting the eyelids.

The Procedure

The incision for upper eyelid surgery is typically made within the natural crease of the eyelid.  During the procedure, the surgeon will remove excess skin and tighten the underlying muscles.  The fat pad may also need to be reduced or repositioned to resolve eyelid puffiness.

An upper eyelid lift is an outpatient procedure typically done under local anesthesia, and takes about one hour to perform.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty corrects bags and excess skin beneath the eyes and minimizes the appearance of hollows.

Bags under the eyes occur because the muscles and tissues around the eyes weaken over time, causing the fat to protrude.  Also, the laxity of the skin contributes to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles in the area.

The Procedure

The incision for lower blepharoplasty is made just beneath the lash line to allow excess skin to be removed.  The incision can also be made inside the lower eyelid.  This technique is ideal for patients that only need to reposition or remove fat.

What Is Recovery After Blepharoplasty Like?

There is typically bruising and swelling after blepharoplasty, which peaks 2-4 days after surgery and takes about 2 weeks to resolve.  Patients should use cold compresses and sleep with their head elevated for the first few days after surgery to minimize swelling.

Most patients can resume regular activities within 7-10 days.  Patients should follow the post-op instructions of their plastic surgeon to ensure a speedy recovery after eyelid surgery.

When Will You See Results?

Some improvement in the appearance of the eyelids can be seen immediately after surgery.  However, final results won’t be visible until the swelling and bruising diminish, which usually takes about 2 weeks.

Are You A Good Candidate For Blepharoplasty?

If you have excess upper eyelid skin and/or under-eye bags, you may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty.  Candidates for blepharoplasty should also be healthy, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.

Complementary Procedures

The appearance of the upper eyelids may be affected by the forehead.  As a result, blepharoplasty is often combined with a forehead lift/brow lift to achieve optimal eyelid rejuvenation.  A brow lift focuses on elevating droopy brows.

Benefits Of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty improves the definition of the area around the eyelids by removing loose, sagging skin, and tightening the muscles.

The results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting, and patients are generally pleased with the outcome.   However, minimizing sun exposure, reducing stress, and not smoking can help to maintain the results.

If you are ready to do something about your tired-looking eyelids, eyelid surgery is an effective way to rejuvenate your eyes and refresh your appearance.

How Much Does an Eyelid Lift Cost?

By Experts in Plastic Surgery · Comments (0) · Friday, July 30th, 2021

Do your eyelids look exceptionally droopy or puffy?  If your eyelids make you look tired all the time, regardless of how much sleep you get, you may want to consider eyelid surgery.  An eyelid lift rejuvenates the eye area and enhances facial appearance.   One of the most common questions eyelid surgery patients ask is – How much does an eyelid lift cost?

What Is An Eyelid Lift?

An eyelid lift, known medically as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the upper, lower, or both eyelids.  Blepharoplasty also refreshes the area around the eyes and gives the face a rested, youthful appearance.

Upper eyelid surgery removes loose skin and excess fat from the upper eyelids to give the eyes a more youthful appearance.

Lower eyelid surgery corrects fat bags under the eyes and involves removing or repositioning fat below the eyes.

Eyelid surgery is a customized procedure tailored to fit the unique features and aesthetic concerns of each patient.

When Will You See Results?

You should see some improvement in the appearance of your eyelids immediately after surgery.  However, post-op swelling and bruising may prevent final results from being seen for several weeks.

How Much Does An Eyelid Lift Cost

According to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of an eyelid lift is $3,282.  However, there are other fees besides those considered in the average cost.  These include the surgeon’s fees, anesthesia fees, surgical facility fees, and the cost of pre-operative medical tests and post-op medication.

The complexity of the procedure and the geographic location of the practice are other factors that can impact the cost of eyelid surgery.  Blepharoplasty is generally more expensive in regions with a high cost of living.

Eyelid surgery is often combined with a brow lift to fully rejuvenate the upper portion of the face.  Whereas eyelid surgery reduces excess skin and restores the eyelids to their original position, it does not correct sagging eyebrows, but a brow lift will.  Combining procedures will push up the final cost.

The best way to know the cost of eyelid surgery is to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.  The surgeon will evaluate your eyelid concerns to determine if you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery and provide a cost estimate.

Will Insurance Cover The Cost Of Your Eyelid Surgery?

Medical insurance does not cover the cost of eyelid surgery when it is done purely for cosmetic purposes.  However, insurance plans will pay for upper eyelid surgery if it is being done to address a functional problem like eyelid ptosis (droopy upper eyelid), which affects peripheral vision.

Financing Eyelid Surgery

Some practices offer payment plans to make the cost of eyelid surgery more manageable for patients.   Financing is also available through medical care companies that offer loans exclusively for cosmetic procedures.

Who Is A Good Candidate For An Eyelid Lift?

Men and women with droopy upper eyelids or bags below the eyes are the most suitable candidates for an eyelid lift.  Candidates should be in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations of the results of surgery.

Choosing The Right Plastic Surgeon

Since your eyes are delicate and irreplaceable, it is essential to choose the right plastic surgeon to perform your eyelid lift.  Therefore,  it is not advisable to choose a plastic surgeon based on cost alone.

Eyelid surgery is a procedure that requires significant expertise and attention to detail.  If you want beautiful eyelid surgery results, it’s crucial to select a highly qualified surgeon with the necessary experience in facial plastic surgery.

Are you ready to revive your droopy, puffy eyes?  Eyelid surgery can dramatically refresh the area around the eyes and make you look alert and more youthful.
