A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that is done to flatten and tone the abdominal area. This is achieved by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles.
How long is recovery from a tummy tuck?
The timeline for recovery after a tummy tuck varies for each patient, but generally ranges from 6-8 weeks. Some patients may need to take up to 4 weeks off work.
There are several factors that can affect the length of the recovery after a tummy tuck including the type of tummy tuck performed, age and general health of the patient, and post-operative care.
Recovery after a tummy tuck
Patients typically need assistance at home for at least 2-3 days after a tummy tuck. The abdominal area is usually swollen for several weeks, but a compression garment is worn to help minimize swelling. There may also be some bruising, pain, and soreness. Pain medication is prescribed to ease pain and soreness.
Short walks are recommended during tummy tuck recovery to prevent blood clots. However, vigorous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a minimum of 6 weeks.
Patients should closely follow the recommendations of their plastic surgeon, to ensure optimum healing after a tummy tuck.
