If you are about to have breast augmentation, chances are you’re looking forward to seeing your results but wonder what to expect during recovery.   Knowing how long it takes to heal can help improve recovery and ensure you get the results you want. But how long is recovery from breast augmentation?

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that improves the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts.  This is generally achieved using silicone or saline implants.  Breast implants may be placed below the chest muscle (submuscular) or above the muscle (subglandular).

Women often opt to have breast augmentation to counteract changes to the breasts that occur due to pregnancy, weight loss, and aging.  As a result, breast augmentation is often combined with a breast lift or mastopexy for maximum breast enhancement.  A breast lift elevates sagging breasts to a more youthful position.

How Long Is Recovery From Breast Augmentation?

Full recovery from breast augmentation takes an average of 6 weeks.  However, recovery time will vary for each patient.  Factors such as the placement, size, and type of breast implants can impact the length of post-surgery recovery.

The recovery timeline can also be affected by the rate at which you heal and your overall health.

Patients should closely follow their surgeon’s post-op instructions to ensure the best possible recovery.

What To Expect During Recovery

You will spend a few hours in the post-operative room for observation before being released, and will need someone to drive you home.

There will be swelling, tightness, bruising, and pain in the chest in the days immediately after surgery.  Pain medication and muscle relaxers are prescribed to help ease the discomfort.

Depending on the extent of the breast augmentation, drains may be put in place to drain out fluid that might accumulate during healing.  These are usually removed at the first post-op visit.  Also, a post-surgical support bra is worn to help minimize swelling and support the implants.

It is essential to get lots of rest in the first few days after surgery, and your surgeon will let you know what level of activity is appropriate during this time.

You can resume normal activities about 7-10 days after surgery, but you should wait at least 6 weeks before engaging in vigorous exercise, or going back to the gym.  Most of the swelling and bruising should subside within 3-4 weeks.

The breasts may initially look higher and rounder than expected, but they should settle into their final size and shape about 3 months after surgery.

When Can You Return To Work After Breast Augmentation?

You should feel better a few days after surgery and be able to return to work within 7 days. However, if you have a strenuous job, you may need to take additional time off.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Tips

  • Get plenty of rest and eat foods that will help your body heal
  • Plan to have a family member or friend with you for at least 72 hours after surgery to assist with household chores, as you will feel extremely sore and tired.
  • Wear a support bra as recommended
  • Take pain medication as prescribed to reduce discomfort
  • Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated, as this will help to minimize soreness and swelling
  • Keep all your post-op appointments

Breast augmentation not only enhances the appearance of your breasts, it can also boost your self-confidence and improve your body image.

If you are planning to undergo breast augmentation, remember that recovery is different for every patient.  But if you work along with your plastic surgeon, you can enjoy a smooth recovery and get beautiful, natural-looking results.

How Much Are Breast Implants?

By Experts in Plastic Surgery · Comments (0) · Thursday, August 12th, 2021

If you are considering breast augmentation, it’s very natural to wonder about the cost.  Knowing the average cost of breast implants can help you better prepare for surgery and determine if you need to obtain financing.   So how much are breast implants?

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation or augmentation mammaplasty enhances the shape and size of the breasts and improves their overall appearance.  This typically involves using implants to add volume and fullness to the breasts.  The breasts often lose volume after pregnancy or due to aging or significant weight loss.

Breast Implants

There are two main types of breast implants silicone and saline implants.  Both types of implants have an outer shell made of silicone, but silicone implants are filled with silicone gel, while saline implants contain sterile salt water.

Breast implants are available in various shapes, sizes, and textures.  Silicone breast implants are the preferred option, as they look natural and feel like real breast tissue.

How Much Are Breast Implants?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of breast augmentation is $3,947.

The cost of breast implants may vary considerably due to factors such as the surgeon’s fees, type of implants, and geographic location.

Factors That Affect The Final Cost Of Breast Augmentation

Surgeon’s Training And Experience

The training and experience of the plastic surgeon are key considerations that can affect the cost of breast augmentation.  Board-certified plastic surgeons with advanced training and extensive experience may have higher fees, but they are the smartest choice.

Patients should be wary of inexperienced surgeons as they may lack the competence needed to deliver successful results.

Type Of Implants

Silicone implants generally cost more than saline implants.  Silicone implants are more expensive to produce and distribute relative to saline implants.

Geographic Location

The cost of breast implants is also affected by the region in which surgery takes place.  Large metropolitan cities tend to have a higher cost of living.  Therefore, surgery generally costs more in those regions than it does in smaller towns.

There are also associated fees that can affect the final cost of surgery.  These include anesthesia fees, surgical facility fees, as well as the cost of post-op medications and garments.

How Much Will Breast Implants Cost You?

Each patient is unique, so breast augmentation surgery is customized based on their anatomy and aesthetic goals.  As a result, it’s difficult to determine how much surgery will cost you without scheduling an in-office consultation with a plastic surgeon.

Does Insurance Cover The Cost Of Breast Implants?

Insurance coverage may be available when breast implant surgery is done as part of breast reconstruction after a mastectomy.   Other cases of breast augmentation are considered elective and not covered by insurance.  However, cosmetic surgery financing is available through companies like Prosper Healthcare Lending.

Are You A Good Candidate For Breast Implants?

Now that you understand what goes into the cost of breast implants, you’re probably wondering if you would be a good candidate for surgery.

If your breasts lack fullness or are asymmetrical, chances are you would be a good candidate for breast implants.  You should also be in good physical and mental health and have realistic expectations about what can be accomplished with surgery.  It is also essential to understand the risks of surgery.

If you are thinking of getting breast implants, don’t let cost be the determining factor or you could end up compromising on safety and results.   Do your research, verify the surgical training and experience of the plastic surgeon, and make sure to select a surgeon you trust.

How Much is Breast Augmentation?

If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, the cost is probably a primary concern for you since the procedure is not usually covered by insurance.  It’s therefore helpful to do some research and consult with a plastic surgeon, so that you have a realistic idea of the cost of breast augmentation.

How Much is Breast Augmentation?

According to the latest statistics from the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of breast augmentation is around $3,947.  However, your final price tag may be higher than the average because several variables can affect the total cost.

What Factors Go Into The Cost Of Breast Augmentation?

The main factors that go into the cost of breast augmentation are the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia fees, and surgical facility fees.

Surgeon’s Fees

Experienced board-certified plastic surgeons generally charge more to perform breast augmentation than surgeons with less training and experience.  It’s essential to select a surgeon with the required training and experience who can handle potential complications.

Anesthesia Fees

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, and anesthesia is usually priced on a per-hour basis, so longer surgeries cost more.   The cost of anesthesia will also vary based on the provider.  A board-certified anesthesiologist may charge a higher fee than a nurse anesthetist.

Surgical Facility Fees

Surgery usually costs less when performed at the surgeon’s office-based surgical facility.  However, patients should ensure that the operating facility is accredited by a regulatory agency such as the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

The cost of breast augmentation can also vary dramatically from city to city.  For example, breast augmentation costs more in Los Angeles and Dallas than it does in Chicago.

When considering breast augmentation, it’s essential to choose a plastic surgeon based on their skill and expertise and not make your decision on cost alone.
