How Does Liposuction Work?

By Experts in Plastic Surgery · Comments (0) · Thursday, September 23rd, 2021

Are you struggling to reach your ideal body shape although you eat well and exercise regularly?  If you need some help to achieve your goals, you might want to consider liposuction.  Liposuction will get rid of stubborn fat and make you look slimmer and more toned.  But how does liposuction work?

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a fat reduction procedure that removes stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise.   Getting rid of fat from specific areas recontours the body and improves overall body shape.

Tumescent liposuction is the most popular liposuction technique, but there are other approaches that utilize the power of ultrasound, laser, and radiofrequency technology.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss technique, as ideal candidates should already be at or near their goal weight.

Common areas for liposuction include the abdomen, hips, thighs, and upper arms.

How Does Liposuction Work?

Tumescent liposuction is a safe, effective procedure, which involves injecting a tumescent solution into the treatment areas at the start of surgery.  The solution consists of a local anesthetic and epinephrine.

The tumescent solution causes the fatty tissue to become swollen and firm and temporarily shrinks the blood vessels.  This helps to minimize blood loss during the operation and reduce swelling and bruising after surgery.

Once the tumescent solution is administered, a cannula (small, thin tube) is inserted in the targeted area through a small incision. The cannula is moved back and forth to loosen the excess fat.  When this is complete, a vacuum suction connected to the cannula is used to extract the fat.

Liposuction Options

Laser-assisted lipo and ultrasound-assisted lipo are two of the other liposuction options available.  Laser-assisted lipo uses laser energy to liquefy the fat, while ultrasound-assisted lipo uses the power of ultrasound to break down the fat.  The liquefied fat is also removed using suction, as is the case with tumescent liposuction.

What To Expect After Liposuction?

After liposuction, patients will experience some bruising, swelling, redness, and pain.  However, pain medication is prescribed to reduce discomfort.  Much of the swelling should resolve within four weeks.

A compression garment is usually worn for 1-2 months after liposuction to minimize swelling and help with healing.  The compression garment also provides support for the new body contours.

Patients are encouraged to walk around after liposuction but exercising should be avoided for at least 3 weeks.

When Will You See Results?

Results are not seen immediately after liposuction, as it typically takes a few weeks for the swelling to resolve.   However, most patients notice an improvement in body contours about 1-3 months after surgery.

How Long Will The Results Last?

The results of liposuction are long-lasting because the fat removed during treatment is gone for good.  However, the remaining fat cells will get bigger if patients gain a lot of weight after surgery.  Consequently, it’s best to adopt a healthy lifestyle and get regular exercise after liposuction to maintain the results.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Liposuction?

People within 10-20 pounds of their ideal weight with a few stubborn bulges they have been unable to shift with diet and exercise are generally good candidates for liposuction.

Candidates should also be generally fit and healthy and have firm, elastic skin because liposuction does not tighten the skin.  Therefore, people with a lot of loose skin are not good candidates for the procedure as they could end up with contour irregularities. Liposuction candidates should also have realistic expectations about surgery.

If you have a few areas of unwanted fat that you’ve been unable to shift with diet and exercise, liposuction will get rid of those unwanted bulges and reshape your body.

What to Expect After a Liposuction Procedure?

By Experts in Plastic Surgery · Comments (0) · Friday, June 4th, 2021

Do you eat a healthy diet and spend hours in the gym but still have some areas of stubborn fat that simply won’t budge?  Liposuction can remove those fat bulges and sculpt the smoother, sleeker body contours you desire.  But what does liposuction involve, and what can you expect after the procedure?

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical fat removal procedure that targets areas of stubborn fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise.

Liposuction is a versatile body contouring treatment that can be performed on almost any part of the body.  The abdomen, butt, flanks, hips, and thighs are among the most popular target spots for women, while the abdomen and flanks are common problem areas for men.

How Liposuction Works

Traditional liposuction uses a cannula with suction to break up and remove pockets of excess fat from the body.  However, there are now more advanced liposuction techniques available including, External Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposculpture (EUAL).

EUAL is a modified technique that combines traditional liposuction with ultrasound energy.  During EUAL, ultrasonic energy is applied to the treatment zones to liquefy the fat deposits. The heat from the ultrasound energy also helps to tighten and contour the skin.

Once the fat is liquefied, the surgeon will then use gentle suction to remove the fat.  This type of procedure causes less tissue trauma because the unwanted fat can be easily dislodged after it is liquefied.

Liposuction is typically done on an outpatient basis.  However, the length of the procedure varies depending on the surgical technique and the amount of fat being removed.

What To Expect After A Liposuction Procedure?

  • Recovery

After liposuction, patients can expect to experience some bruising and swelling as well as mild pain.  A compression garment is worn to help minimize swelling, but residual swelling may persist for up to six weeks.  Medication is prescribed to ease the pain.

The recovery timeline for liposuction varies depending on the specific technique used to perform surgery.  Traditional liposuction may need up to 2 weeks of recovery, but less recovery time is required with advanced procedures like EUAL.

There is minimal swelling and bruising after EUAL because surgery causes less trauma in the tissues.  As a result, patients sometimes only need 2-3 days of recovery.

  • When Will You See Results?

How soon you see results after liposuction depends on the degree of post-operative swelling.  There is typically significant swelling after traditional liposuction, so the final results won’t be visible until the swelling has subsided.  This can take 1-3 months.

  • How Long Do The Results Last?

The new body shape achieved with liposuction can last a long time because the fat cells removed during treatment do not grow back.  However, if patients gain weight after liposuction, the remaining fat cells will get bigger.  This includes cells in the areas treated with liposuction.

After liposuction, patients are advised to make healthy diet choices and get regular exercise, to maintain their new look.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Liposuction?

Liposuction is a good option for individuals who already maintain a healthy diet and follow a regular exercise regimen, but have a few areas of stubborn fat they are struggling to reduce.

Candidates for liposuction should also have realistic expectations about surgery.  Liposuction is not a weight-loss solution, so candidates should already be at their goal weight and only need to reduce specific target areas.

If you think liposuction may be a good fit for you, schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss the options available.  The surgeon will review the possibilities and determine which procedure would be right for you.

How Long is Recovery from Liposuction?

By Experts in Plastic Surgery · Comments (0) · Wednesday, May 19th, 2021

One of the major concerns people considering liposuction have, is about the recovery time.  They often don’t know what to expect during recovery or how long it will take to heal.  Knowing how long recovery is likely to take helps patients make informed decisions about surgery.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes unwanted fat from specific regions of the body to improve overall contours.   It is the ideal way to get rid of those annoying fat bulges that are resistant to diet and exercise.  Areas commonly treated with liposuction include the abdomen, flanks, upper arms, and thighs.  Liposuction is customized to meet the individual needs of each patient.

There are different liposuction techniques including tumescent liposuction, laser liposuction, ultrasound liposuction, and high definition liposuction.

How Long Is Recovery From Liposuction?

It typically takes about 7 days to recover from liposuction.  However, recovery may vary from patient to patient depending on the technique used and the amount of fat removed.  There is less bruising and swelling with modern methods such as laser liposuction and ultrasound liposuction, which means fewer recovery days.

What To Expect During Recovery?

Patients can expect to have pain and swelling in the days following liposuction.   The swelling may last for several weeks.  There may also be some bruising at the incision sites.

A compression garment is worn for several weeks after surgery to help the tissues heal properly, and minimize swelling.  The compression garment also provides support for the new body contours.  When the compression garment is worn as required after liposuction, it assists healing and enhances the final results.

The improved body shape can be seen about 2-3 months after surgery.

After liposuction, it’s important not to rush recovery.  Get plenty of rest, eat well, and take the time you need to heal properly.
