What's the Recovery Time for a Rhinoplasty?

Have you finally decided to get that nose surgery (rhinoplasty) you’ve always wanted? Keep in mind that rhinoplasty is a complex surgical procedure, so there could be major downtime. One of the most important questions to ask your plastic surgeon is – what’s the recovery time for a rhinoplasty. You should also enquire about what to expect during the recovery process.

What’s the Recovery Time for a Rhinoplasty?

Every patient recovers differently after a rhinoplasty, but 1-2 weeks of downtime is normal. Most patients need to take 5-7 days off work.

Immediately after rhinoplasty, patients will feel mild pain and pressure around the nose, as well as some soreness. Pain medication is prescribed to manage the discomfort. Patients are advised not to blow their nose for at least 1 week after surgery, as this could open incisions and disrupt healing.

Nasal oozing is a problem for some patients, but this usually clears after about 7 days.

Swelling after rhinoplasty can take several months to fully resolve, but the majority of the swelling is usually gone within 4-8 weeks.

Tips for recovery from rhinoplasty

Patients are advised to get as much rest as possible after rhinoplasty, especially during the first few days. Keeping the head elevated while at rest will reduce pressure on the nose, and help speed up the recovery process.

A cold compress can be used around the eyes and nose in the days immediately after surgery, to help minimize swelling.

Following the post-operative instructions of your plastic surgeon, and taking all medication as prescribed, will ensure a successful recovery after rhinoplasty.
