Is There Any Scarring With a Rhinoplasty?

Interested in a nose job, but concerned about scarring? You’re not alone. Since the nose has such a prominent position on the face, post-surgical scarring is one thing candidates for rhinoplasty are always concerned about. So they typically ask their plastic surgeon – Is there any scarring with a rhinoplasty.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is an in-office procedure that is typically done to adjust the shape and/or size of the nose.

Is there any scarring with a rhinoplasty?

Since rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that requires incisions, scarring is inescapable. However, the scarring with rhinoplasty depends on the specific technique used to perform the operation, and the aesthetic goals of the patient.

Rhinoplasty can be performed using the open or closed techniques. With the closed technique, the structures of the nose are accessed through small incisions made within the nostrils, and as a result, there are no visible scars.

With the open technique, the underlying bone and cartilage are accessed through incisions made in the columella. The columella is the soft tissue that lies between the two nostrils. The scar from open rhinoplasty is very subtle and only visible when the nose is looked at from below.

The specific technique used to perform rhinoplasty will depend on the structures that need to be adjusted.

If you are thinking about rhinoplasty, you certainly should be happy to learn that there is either very little scarring with rhinoplasty, or none at all (click here).
