What is fat transfer?

Fat transfer also known as fat grafting, is a minimally invasive procedure that is often used in facial rejuvenation to restore lost volume in the cheeks and midface. It involves harvesting fat from an area of the body that has extra fat (e.g. the abdomen, hips, or thighs), and transferring it to areas that lack volume.

How exactly does a fat transfer work?

The fat is first harvested from the donor area using a gentle liposuction technique such as a syringe system. The collected fat is then purified in preparation for the injection process. As a final step, fat grafting cannulas are used to inject the fat into the face to plump areas that have lost volume, or to fill out folds, creases, and wrinkles. After being injected into the new location, the fat has to develop a blood supply in order to receive the nutrients needed to survive (click here to learn more).

Fat transfer may be done in combination with dermal fillers to create optimal balance among facial features, and restore facial fullness.

How many treatments do I need?

Some of the transferred fat will be reabsorbed into the body, so more than one treatment is usually required to achieve the best results.
