Neck lines also referred to as necklace lines, can be aesthetically unattractive, so it’s always important not to neglect the neck in your skin care routine. Neck lines are often the result of aging and sun exposure, but genetics also plays a role, as young people can also have neck lines. Physicians generally do not recommend neck lift surgery to eliminate necklace lines in younger folks, but there are non-surgical options available to them.
What are necklace lines
Necklace lines are those horizontal neck lines that sometimes go all the way around the neck, and often deepen as you age.
Treatment for Neck Lines
Neck lines that are not very deep can be treated with non-surgical options that utilize laser and/or light technology. They can also be significantly reduced with chemical peels. For younger patients, laser treatment is a very effective way to reduce neck lines, as it tightens the skin, and increases collagen production. Fractional laser resurfacing is particularly beneficial, because it treats only specific zones of the skin, and this limits the damage to the skin, resulting in a much shorter healing time.
However, laser treatment is not as effective on older patients, as they usually have much less skin elasticity. For these patients, doctors normally recommend either platysmaplasty, or a neck lift. Platysmaplasty is able to eliminate necklace lines because it tightens the neck muscles, making the lines less visible, but in some cases a full neck lift may be required.
