Men with enlarged breasts no longer have to feel embarrassed or self-conscious about the condition, because it can be easily corrected with surgery. But what is the process for male breast reduction surgery like.
What causes male breast enlargement
The excess development of male breast tissue, known medically as gynecomastia, is common among teenage boys going through puberty, as it’s generally caused by hormone fluctuations. However, it does affect some older men as well.
What is the process for male breast reduction surgery?
The approach taken to perform male breast reduction surgery will depend on the degree and location of the enlargement. The fullness may be localized and limited to just below the breast, or it may affect the entire breast.
Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure that is done using either general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will decide which option is right for you.
For those men that have a lot of extra breast tissue, the surplus will be removed using an excision technique. The incision is generally made around the areola, and the excess tissue removed.
In cases where there is more fatty tissue in the breast, liposuction is done to extract the fat and other tissue. Tiny incisions are made around the breast, and a cannula is inserted to break up the fat deposits, which are then removed with a vacuum suction.
The length of recovery after male breast reduction varies depending on the type of procedure performed, but it ranges from 7-14 days.
