What Breast Implants are Available?

Have you decided to have breast augmentation?  If so, there are many questions to ask your plastic surgeon about the procedure, including what breast implants are available. The type of breast implants you choose is a crucial consideration because it impacts the final result of breast augmentation.

What Breast Implants Are Available?

Saline and silicone implants are the two main types of breast implants on the market, and they are available in different shapes, sizes, and textures.

Saline Implants

Saline implants contain sterile salt water, but have an outer shell made of silicone. They are FDA approved for women 18 years and older.  Saline implants are filled at the time of surgery, so a shorter incision is required for placement.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are comprised of silicone gel, and are recommended for women 22 years and older.  Silicone implants are soft to the touch and patients generally report that they look and feel more like natural breast tissue.

Gummy Bear Implants

There are newer types of silicone implants known as gummy bear implants.  Gummy bear implants contain a highly cohesive silicone gel that is thicker and more stable than the gel in traditional silicone implants.   As a result, gummy bear implants hold their shape better than other silicone implants.

The risk of rupture or leakage is lower with gummy bear implants.  However, if they do rupture the likelihood of leakage is minimized because of the thickness of the gel.

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Breast implants are not lifetime devices, so they generally need to be replaced at some point.  They typically last 10-20 years.

Which Breast Implant Is Right For You?

The right breast implant for you should be determined in consultation with your plastic surgeon, and will depend on your body type and the look you want to achieve.
