Breast reduction is a procedure that is usually performed to reduce the size of a woman’s breasts. Overly large breasts can often result in a myriad of physical problems that can often only be remedied by undergoing breast reduction. However before doing surgery many women worry about getting scars, and want to know if it is possible to minimize scarring with breast reduction surgery.
Many women who opt to undergo breast reductiondo so because they are unhappy with the way they look, and would love to have a reduction. Dr. Kyle Songo f Orange County, CA is a skilled plastic surgeon who performs breast reduction surgery using a technique that leaves only minimal scars.
The scars associated with breast reduction surgery are the result of incisions made around the areola for the repositioning of the nipples. However using a more advanced surgical approach, Dr. Song is able to minimize scarring with breast reduction surgery.
The SPAIR Technique
Traditionally, the incision for breast reduction surgery left a long scar on the underside of the breast. The scar stretched from the lateral chest wall, to the mid-part of the sternum. There was also another scar in the center of the breast, and around the areola.
In the SPAIR technique a smaller, semi-circular incision is made around the areola and down the inframammary fold. Tissue is then removed from around the nipple and areola. Liposuction may also be used to remove excess fat.
With the SPAIR technique it is possible to minimize scarring with breast reduction surgery, because the anchor scar is not required. This is the scar that was traditionally made on the underside of the breast. Using this method, patients are able to get beautiful breasts with less scarring and faster recovery.
