Ear pinning surgery in children
Otoplasty is commonly done on children that have protruding ears, as they are often ridiculed by their peers because of their irregular shaped ears. The operation is performed on children that are older than 5 years of age, since the ears usually reach their full size by this time. Early correction of prominent areas is generally recommended, as the cartilage is more flexible at this time, making contouring easier.
Otoplasty procedure
Adults are also self-conscious about their prominent ears, and opt for ear pinning surgery to correct it. Otoplasty is normally done on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia. The incision for surgery is usually done along the back of the ear, so that the scar is less visible. During the operation the surgeon will remove excess cartilage and skin. If necessary, cartilage will be remodeled and folded into the desired position and secured with stitches.
What to expect during Recovery
After surgery, bandages will be used to support the ears and hold them in their new position. Pain medication may be prescribed to reduce discomfort. The bandages will be removed a few days after surgery, but patients may still experience some swelling.
Full recovery after otoplasty typically takes several weeks. If you have prominent ears, then ear pinning surgery can set them back closer to the head, to give the ears a more normal appearance.
